Methodology: Oral expression

What is tested

For the Grand Oral and the LV1 oral assessments, you must speak fluently, accurately and convincingly for 5 to 10 minutes on a topic linked to your specialities or to one of the eight cultural axes.

Structure of a strong oral

1. Hook / introduction — define the topic, state a clear problematic ("To what extent…?", "How does… reflect…?"), announce 2 or 3 axes.
2. Two or three argumentative parts — each opens with a topic sentence, develops one idea, leans on at least one concrete example (work of art, news event, statistic, literary excerpt) and ends with a mini-conclusion.
3. Conclusion — answer the problematic, open onto a wider issue.

Phonological checklist

• Word stress on the right syllable: deMOcracy, poLItical, teCHnology.
• Sentence stress on lexical words (nouns, verbs, adjectives), reduction of grammatical words.
• Intonation: rising for yes/no questions, falling for declaratives and wh-questions.
• Watch the th sound (/θ/ and /ð/), the schwa /ə/ in unstressed syllables, the final -ed (/t/, /d/, /ɪd/).

Avoiding "blank moments"

If you forget a word: paraphrase ("a kind of…", "what we call…", "the device used to…"). Never switch back to French.

Body language

Look at the examiner, keep an open posture, use moderate gestures, breathe between sentences. Bring brief notes (key words, dates, quotations) — never a full script.

Self-training routine

Record yourself (2 minutes a day), then listen with the transcript. Read aloud authentic content (TED Talks, BBC News). Shadow native speakers to improve rhythm.
